FAQ

  • Q: At what age can I be employed as a lifeguard?

    A: You can be employed at the Y at 15, as long as you are turning 16 within 60 days of your hire date. At the City of Austin, you can be employed at 15 at specific locations.

  • Q: Is there a limit to the number of hours that I can work in the summer?

    A: You can work up to 40 hours at all outdoor pool locations.

  • Q: Is there an option to continue lifeguarding after summer ends?

    A: All of the indoor pools at the YMCA remain open year-round and offer continuous employment. Several of the outdoor City of Austin pools also remain open year-round and offer continuous employment options.

  • Q: Do I have to be certified as a lifeguard in order to apply for a position?

    A: You do not have to be a certified lifeguard to apply for a position but you will need to become certified in order to get hired. The YMCA and the City of Austin offer a variety of lifeguard classes and we both hire many of our staff from those classes. Click here to check out current class offerings.

  • Q: Can I become a lifeguard if I’m not on the swim team?

    A: Yes! While you do not need to be a competitive swimmer to become a lifeguard, you will need to pass a prerequisite swim test in order to participate in the lifeguard class. Your swim test will occur on the first day
    of class.

  • Q: Are there additional certifications that I need to become a lifeguard?

    A: Yes. To become a lifeguard, you must be certified in: CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, and Lifeguarding. If you choose to take your lifeguarding class at any of the YMCA or City of Austin locations, you will complete all certifications during one class.

  • Q: How long does the Lifeguard certification last? How do I renew my certification?

    A: The American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR/ AED/First Aid certifications last for two years from the time you successfully complete the course. At the end of your certification period you may complete a refresher course to renew your certifications for another two years.

  • Q: What kind of equipment will I need participate in the Lifeguard class?

    A: Students must bring a bathing suit to participate in the class; one piece suits are required for females. Goggles are optional but will be prohibited during some portions of the class.  Sunscreen, water bottles, towels, and Lunch or lunch money are all recommended items to bring to class.
